Poovar was a timber, sandalwood, ivory and spice trading hub. The village was one of the ancient Muslim colonies along India’s western coast. Malik Deenar, an eighth century Muslim cleric, founded the central mosque in Poovar. Poovar was a major port during the reign of the Chola dynasty. Connections with Greece and Rome are mentioned by the explorer Megasthenes, Roman author Pliny the Elder and Venetian traveller Marco Polo.
