Poovar is a small provincial town with pristine, unexplored brilliant sand sea shores and lovely backwaters of Kerala, situated 27 kms from Thiruvananthapuram. The quiet Poovar island, otherwise called a fishing town, lies between the Arabian Sea and the Neyyar River. Using a pontoon (especially during the sunset) that will carry you through the backwater mangrove timberland is an utter necessity for movement. Poovar was a timber, sandalwood, ivory and spice trading hub. The village was one of the ancient Muslim colonies along India’s western coast. Malik Deenar, an eighth century Muslim cleric, founded the central mosque in Poovar. Poovar was a major port during the reign of the Chola dynasty. Connections with Greece and Rome are mentioned by the explorer Megasthenes, Roman author Pliny the Elder and Venetian traveller Marco Polo.
