The temple is one of the 12 shrines of Jyotirlinga, where Shiva is worshipped in the form of a pillar of light, meaning Jyotirlinga.

It is a popular tourist destination in India, famous for its unique ocean sunrise, sunset and moonrise, the 133-foot Thiruvalluvar Statue and Vivekananda Rock Memorial off the coast, and as a pilgrimage centre.
