The Saraswathi Mahal Library, or Saraswathi Mahal Library of Tanjore Maharaja Serfoji, is located in Thanjavur (Tanjore), Tamil Nadu , India. It is one of Asia ‘s oldest libraries and has a rare collection of manuscripts and papers written in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu , Marathi, English and a few other Indian languages on display.There are well over 60,000 volumes in the collection, although only a tiny fraction of these are on show.
A Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva, located in Thanjavur in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, is the Brihadeeshwara Temple (Peruvudaiyar Kovil). Periya Kovil, RajaRajeswara Temple and Rajarajesvaram are also known. It is one of India’s largest temples and is an example of the Chola period of Dravidian architecture.
Built and completed in 1010 AD by Emperor Raja Raja Chola I, the temple turned 1000 years old in 2010. The temple is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the “Great Living Chola Temples”, with the other two being the Brihadeeswarar Temple, Gangaikonda Cholapuram and Airavatesvara temple.
In the midst of fortified walls that were probably added in the 16th century, the temple stands. The vimanam (temple tower) is the world’s tallest and is 216 ft (66 m ) tall. The temple’s Kumbam (the apex or the bulbous structure on the top) is carved from a single rock and weighs about 80 tonnes.
There is a large Nandi (sacred bull) statue, carved out of a single rock at the entrance, about 16 ft (4.9 m) long and 13 ft (4.0 m) high. The whole structure of the temple is made of granite, the nearest source of which is about 60 km west of the temple.
