Veenai and Thavil’s musical instruments cast a spell of magic on the audience through the enchanting melodies. In classical music, the culturally enriched local indigenous inhabitants of the place have a strong basis. Thanjavur ‘s beautiful paintings depict the artists of the place ‘s rich artistic ability and creative imagination.

Periya Kovil, RajaRajeswara Temple and Rajarajesvaram are also known. It is one of India’s largest temples and is an example of the Chola period of Dravidian architecture.

Built and completed in 1010 AD by Emperor Raja Raja Chola I, the temple turned 1000 years old in 2010. The temple is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the “Great Living Chola Temples”, with the other two being the Brihadeeswarar Temple, Gangaikonda Cholapuram and Airavatesvara temple.

In the midst of fortified walls that were probably added in the 16th century, the temple stands. The vimanam (temple tower) is the world’s tallest and is 216 ft (66 m ) tall. The temple’s Kumbam (the apex or the bulbous structure on the top) is carved from a single rock and weighs about 80 tonnes.

There is a large Nandi (sacred bull) statue, carved out of a single rock at the entrance, about 16 ft (4.9 m) long and 13 ft (4.0 m) high. The whole structure of the temple is made of granite, the nearest source of which is about 60 km west of the temple.
