This area’s earliest records are from the year 1846, when K. Here Gopalsamy Mudaliyar began a coffee plantation. The Karnatic Coffee Company started its coffee plantation here in 1864, but they were unable to make it profitable, so they sold part of their property. In 1875, for the visit of England’s Prince of Wales, the future Edward VII, the roads and guest houses were constructed by soldiers. Valparai is located nearly West side to Dindigul.
For this reason, soldiers were posted here and horses and elephants were used. The visit, however, was ultimately cancelled. W. in 1890, A large portion of land in Valparai was purchased by Wintil and Nordan from the Madras State Government under the British Raj. The region was deforested and tea and coffee were planted by Wintil. From Dindigul to Valparai on the way to visit more sightseeing places like Coimbatore,Pollachi,etc..
During the monsoons (around June), Valparai receives among the region ‘s highest rainfall. Evergreen forests surround the plantations in the area. The field is an elephant region, and many leopards are known to have it.
The drive from Pollachi to the town passes through the Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary, which is renowned for the Bengal tiger, elephants, boars, lion-tailed macaques, gaur, spotted deer, sambar, and giant squirrels. The region is also rich in birds, including the broad hornbill, and hosts migrant seasonal birds including the grey wagtail.
Nilgiri tahr, an endangered wild ungulate, is the home of the Valparai range. Inhabiting the high ranges, these mountain goats prefer open land, cliffs and grass-covered hills, a habitat mostly restricted in the southern Western Ghats to altitudes from 1200 to 2600 m.
In the past, their territory stretched far and wide all over these hills, but they now live only in a few isolated places like the Anaimalai Hills because of poaching and large-scale habitat destruction. The human-elephant conflict here is a delicate problem.
The tea plantations are a barrier to wildlife movement , particularly elephants that walk long distances to reach water bodies and feeding areas. Dindigul to Valparai to visit famous dams,viewpoints and wildlife sanctuary,etc…
One of the places in Valparai receiving the highest rainfall areas in India is Chinna Kallar. To enter Valparai from the plains of Pollachi, there are about 40 steep, hairpin bends. The Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary, one of the most popular attractions in Valparai, can also be visited by visitors. The lion-tailed macaque, barking deer , wild boar, the Nilgiri and the common langur, among others, can be seen at this sanctuary. Valparai is a perfect spot for bird watching, too.
